28/8/2013 This dugong was spotted around the seagrass beds on the landward side of Wave Break island at the Southport Broadwater. Click on the photo to find out more.
This dugong was seen near Wave Break Island on August 17. Dugongs with tags from the tagging program in Morteon Bay are sometimes seen in the Southport Broadwater. Seagrass beds where herds of dugongs feed in Morteon Bay were damaged during the Queensland floods, which could be a factor in dugongs swimming down to the seagrass bed behind Wave Break Island. If the GC City Council proposed cruise ship terminal was built at the Gold Coast Seaway at the Broadwater, it would impact the fragile seagrass bed.
