SA rhino poachers crack last year’s 668: Authorities predict 2013 toll of 1000

October 2, 2013

By Mic Smith

Poachers have killed over 700 rhinos so far in 2013 in South Africa, the Environmental Affairs Ministry reported today.

The losses could tally up to 1000 if authorities, who use drones and helicopters to try to stop poachers, can’t slow the slaughter of the 22000 estimated remaining.

Allegedly the majority of illegal hunters are coming over from neighboring Mozambique to poach Kruger National Park. They sell the horn to crime syndicates with links in South East Asia.
