First whales: Southport Spit marine menagerie

Most cities the talk is about work, food, sport and weekends, but on the Gold Coast the ocean is so much a part of our life that the creatures that live in it are a big part too and come up in everyday conversations. Particularly now the whales are back.

Six young whales have arrived at the Southport Spit.

They were having a bit of a log (sleeping) on Friday off the rock wall. If they were males they might have been sharing a few whale tunes, on their way from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef.

Dale, who drives the surf taxi from the spit to South Straddy, spotted them from his boat at sunrise.
